PROFILE

James Bridgeman, Barrister at Law, FCIArb, Chartered Arbitrator, is a practicing barrister, arbitrator and mediator. Called to the Bar of Ireland in 1989 and to the Bar of England and Wales (Middle Temple 2010).
He is in general practice as a barrister in the courts of Ireland and a member of Lamb Chambers (London) with a special interest in arbitration, ADR, commercial law and intellectual property disputes.
He has acted as arbitrator and tribunal member, as chair and sole panelist in over 200 arbitrations, tribunals and administrative proceedings. He has been invited to join the panels of arbitrators and neutrals of the World Intellectual Property Organisation, National Arbitration Forum (USA), the Czech Arbitration Centre, Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (domain name panels) and Nominet UK. He has acted as mediator in a number of disputes by appointment of parties and by appointment of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (Geneva).
He practices as advocate and advisor for parties engaged in arbitration and other forms of alternative dispute resolution in Ireland, the United Kingdom and other European jurisdictions.
He is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin where he read History and Political Science. He subsequently read Law at the Kings Inns, Dublin. Before commencing practice as a barrister he qualified as a Registered Trademarks Agent. He has a Diploma in Arbitration Law (DIT 1990), a Diploma in International Arbitration Law (DIT, 1991), a Diploma in European Law (UCD 1994) and a Diploma in Construction Law and Contract Management (TCD 2004).
He is a member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration and served for a number of years as a member of the ICC National Committee for Ireland. He is a member of the ICC Task Force on the New York Convention 1958, formerly a member of the ICC Task Force on Arbitration of Competition Law, sometime member of the ICC Working Group on the Arbitration of Intellectual Property Disputes. In 2010 he was appointed by DG Justice of the EU Commission as a member of the Expert Group on the revision of the Brussels 1 Regulation and Arbitration.
A former Chairman of the Irish Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He served for 10 years up to 2007 as a member of the Committee of the Irish Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and was re-elected in April 2008 to the committee. He is a founder member of the CIArb IP&ICT interest group and a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Arbitrators.
He was Vice-Chairman of the Mediators Institute of Ireland. He is the convenor of the Dublin Forum on Arbitration and Competition and the convenor of the Dublin University Construction Law Alumni Association. He was a member of the Private Residential Tenancies Board 2004-2007 and continues to serve as a member of the Dispute Resolution Committee of the Private Residential Tenancies Board.
He is a lecturer in Law at ITT Dublin, an associate lecturer in the Diploma in Construction Law and Contract Administration Trinity College Dublin, and a regular guest lecturer in the Diploma in Arbitration Law, University College Dublin and the Post-Graduate Diploma in Conflict and Dispute Resolution Studies, Trinity College Dublin. He is a member of the International Arbitration Committee of the Irish Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and regularly participates in mediation and arbitration training and assessment courses for the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in Ireland and the United Kingdom as course director, tutor and moderator. He has directed training courses for ADREUROPE and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in London, Prague, Dublin and iIstanbul.
